Williamston's Winter Wonderland Starts Friday Afternoon, a Full Day Before the Parade

The City of Williamston's calendar opens Winter Wonderland on Friday, December 4, at 3 p.m. and runs that first block until 11:45 p.m. The Holiday Light Parade doesn't step off until Saturday at 6 p.m., with the tree lighting right after it. By the time the first float rolls down Grand River, that Friday block alone has already filled close to nine hours on the city's calendar.

Most of that time belongs to a few licensed rooms downtown and to the plastic cup that lets a drink leave them. The weekend is easiest to plan if you read it on the Social District's clock.

Friday belongs to six rooms downtown

The City of Williamston's event page has the 2026 dates. Last year's program is the best guide to how those hours get used. At the November 24, 2025 City Council meeting, Mayor Gilroy read the full Winter Wonderland schedule into the record, about two weeks before the parade.

In 2025, Friday was the Jingle & Mingle Ugly Sweater Pub Crawl, from 5 to 8 p.m. It stopped at six places:

  1. Cancun
  2. Riverhouse Inn
  3. Williamston Pub
  4. Tavern 109
  5. Niko's Taverna
  6. Zynda's

From 8 to 11 p.m., the crawl moved to an afterglow party in the upstairs bar at Williamston Pub, with the Good Times DJ, a photo booth, ugly-sweater awards for singles and groups, and swag for the first 100 people through the door. City Pulse's 2025 holiday calendar listed the same Friday crawl, starting at 5 p.m. and running to close.

The afterglow's 11 p.m. finish matches the downtown Social District's Friday closing time exactly.

What the cup allows downtown

Williamston's downtown Social District dates to 2023. City Council approved social district permit applications for Niko's, Tavern 109, Williamston Pub & Grill and Zynda's on October 9 of that year. The Michigan Liquor Control Commission's permit roster, updated October 29, 2026, still shows the same four businesses with issued permits.

Here is what the city's Social District page and its posted materials lay out:

  • Hours: Sunday through Thursday, noon to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday, noon to 11 p.m.
  • Where to buy: only from the permitted restaurants.
  • The cup: an authorized Social District cup only. No bringing your own and no refills.
  • Where it can go: inside the marked boundaries shown on the city's district map.
  • State container rules: under the MLCC's social district rules, containers carry the selling licensee's mark and a commons-area mark, can't be glass and hold no more than 16 ounces.

This is general information, not legal advice. The city and the MLCC pages linked above are the authority on the details.

For the 2025 Saturday, the schedule listed Niko's Taverna, Williamston Pub and Tavern 109 as all-day Social District participants. That means a drink could stay in hand from the noon market through the parade and into the SnowBall, as long as it stayed inside the district lines.

Saturday morning has a new first stop

Nothing on last year's Saturday started before noon. This year, the morning has an anchor that didn't exist a year ago. Birch & Bean Coffee House is at 725 W. Grand River Avenue, in a 1,500-square-foot storefront that a Biggby Coffee left at the beginning of 2026. The Lansing State Journal reported in September that Ashley and Alex Olson were opening the shop. Ashley spent eight years managing a coffee roaster and cafe in Delhi Township.

Birch & Bean's website now says it is officially open. It serves coffee, handcrafted drinks, breakfast and lunch, Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. On a Saturday that followed last year's pattern, the doors would open five hours before the noon start and close at 4 p.m., the same time the daytime block wraps up.

Saturday runs in shifts

The 2025 Saturday wasn't one event that built to a parade. It was three shifts stacked on the same few blocks, each with its own address:

Time (2025) Event Where
Noon–4 p.m. Cookie Crawl Boxes picked up at City Hall
Noon–4 p.m. Grand River Reindeer Games Warming and gathering areas on Grand River between Jackson and Cedar
Noon–4 p.m. Williamston Christkindl Holiday Markt Tent on Grand River across from City Hall
4–7 p.m. Visit Santa Old Mill parking lot gazebo, then the market after the parade
5–8 p.m. Carriage rides Old Mill parking lot
5:30 p.m. Santa Dash lineup Howard Dahlstrom Park, Mechanic Street
6 p.m. Light Parade Downtown
After the parade Winter Wonderland SnowBall with The Pocket Market tent across from City Hall

The daytime shift sits in the middle of downtown, between City Hall and the Jackson-to-Cedar stretch of Grand River. At 4 p.m. the action moves to the Old Mill lot, where Santa and the carriages set up. The Santa Dash runners line up at Howard Dahlstrom Park on Mechanic Street. At 6 p.m. everything comes back together on Grand River for the parade. The market tent is in use twice that day, first as the Christkindl Holiday Markt and then as the SnowBall's dance floor.

The Cookie Crawl is the only part of the day with a price tag in last year's schedule. Boxes cost $10, payable by cash or check and picked up at City Hall, and all proceeds went to the Williamston Food Bank. Anyone who usually carries only a card should bring a checkbook or some cash.

The parade, when it finally comes

WILX's coverage of the 2025 edition described a lights parade of illuminated, Christmas-themed floats. Before it came the cookie crawl, the Christkindlmarket, games, carriage rides and Santa. For 2026, the regional listing at Choose Lansing keeps the 6 p.m. start and adds the tree lighting right after it. It also promises a Cookie Crawl, a Holiday Market and sleigh rides across the weekend. The City of Williamston presents the event, and the listing's parade photo is credited to the Williamston Events Facebook page.

On last year's schedule, the parade fell about six hours into Saturday and roughly 25 hours after Friday's pub crawl began. The city's 2026 calendar is set up the same way, with the weekend opening Friday afternoon. The parade stays the centerpiece, but most of the weekend's hours come before it.

Putting the weekend on the calendar

Here are the anchors as they stand:

  • Friday, December 4: the city's calendar block runs from 3 p.m. to 11:45 p.m.
  • Saturday, December 5: the Holiday Light Parade at 6 p.m., followed by the tree lighting.
  • Both days: the Social District runs from noon to 11 p.m.

Last year, the full schedule was read into the council record on November 24. The city's Winter Wonderland event page is the place to check for this year's venues, times and Cookie Crawl details.
